March 1, 2025 – National Tree Planting Day
Previously: December 18
Péter Geszti was among the first to join National Tree Planting Day, as he has been planting with us for years; sometimes with his own hands, sometimes with his thoughts and ideas, helping to plant more and more trees.
Why does he consider tree planting important?
we asked him this question, and in his usual rapid-fire style, he summarized the essence in one minute.
Previously: November 7, 2024
Ethologist Vilmos Csányi, Péter Geszti, Gergely Litkai, and the initiator, founder of 10 Million Trees, Iván András Bojár, along with forest ecologist Réka Aszalós and the organization’s main coordinator, Franciska Hervai, highlighted the importance of tree planting and forests at the press conference for the newly established National Tree Planting Day.
Among other things, it was mentioned at the event: everyone feels the effects of climate change, just consider the rapid rise in food prices. Therefore, the organizers invite all Hungarians to join the National Tree Planting Day on March 1, 2025, in the country’s eight regions, where it is already known that at least 100,000 trees will be planted under the coordination of 10 Million Trees.
Join the entire country!
The event’s moderator, popular stand-up comedian Gergely Litkai, drew attention to a shocking aspect, “to understand the magnitude of the problem: there are hardly any untouched forests, primeval forests in Hungary! What exists is only as large as half of Audi’s site in Győr. So there is plenty to do.”
On National Tree Planting Day, beyond the participating civilians, all Hungarian organizations and entities, institutions, and companies can take part. Schools, kindergartens, barracks, universities, companies, theaters, hospitals, sports and religious communities, choirs, hiking groups, employees of multinational companies, yoga practitioners, and birdwatchers, members of various social or civil organizations, and even companies of the national capitalist class.
The country’s trees must be doubled!
The issue of maintaining human habitats is everyone’s concern. We can significantly increase Hungary’s forest cover and tree-dominated green areas in a large-scale manner.
We can replenish much of what our predecessors and we ourselves have cleared from Hungary’s surface since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
According to Professor Vilmos Csányi, who supports the program, “the most important thing is to love trees. According to him, that’s all there is to it! Currently, there are about 6 billion trees in Hungary, and this number should be doubled or tripled. Planting 10 million trees could be the first step.”
Starting this year, we will designate the first Saturday of March as National Tree Planting Day. For the first time on March 1, 2025. We, a foundation, are doing this to ensure the botanical and ecological professionalism of the plantings, and to preserve the original mission of the well-intentioned initiative, preventing it from being appropriated for political or business purposes.
Hungary plants!
Iván András Bojár, founder of 10 Million Trees, stated: “Hungary plants, this could even be the motto of National Tree Planting Day. An average person should be able to spare 1.5 hours to engage in this activity. The most important thing is that the event has no ribbon, no political or other label.
The trunk of a tree is circular, it has no right or left side. Similarly, there is no left-wing or right-wing climate crisis, heatwave, drought, or desertification. We have noticed that planting has fortunately become fashionable recently: companies, media personalities, families celebrating birthdays, politicians, kindergarteners, civilians, and various organizations are planting trees. This is wonderful!
This day is about us Hungarians, our health, and the future of our children! Let’s unite, synchronize our scattered activities, and focus on a single day, Saturday, March 1, 2025, National Tree Planting Day.”
Péter Geszti has long joined the work of 10 Million Trees.
In his speech, he said, “we idealists try to maintain our ability to believe in miracles. The hardest thing is to change our habits and lifestyle.
It’s difficult to break away from the program we live in. The motto ‘one person, one tree’ is excellent for 10 Million Trees, and during the planned planting, everyone can ease their conscience. We place our trust in the future by acting correctly in the present: we can plant together on March 1. We plant and we nurture life!”
Réka Aszalós, researcher at the Ecological Research Center, forest ecologist, and expert of the organization, believes “one of the most important functions of the forest is its cultural service. This is primarily why we are drawn to forests.
A beautiful, natural, old forest not only offers diverse recreational opportunities such as hiking, cycling, and dog walking but also heals, providing peace of mind, which is life-saving for people often living stressful lives in urban environments.”
Franciska Hervai, chief coordinator of 10 Million Trees, spoke about the concrete steps taken so far:
“Even before the organization has started, we can already see that on March 1, we will certainly plant at least 100,000 trees! There will be afforestation, Miyawaki tree planting, sapling planting, and urban planting in 8 regions of the country.
The information platform is already being prepared, the nationaltreeplanting.hu site, detailing which nurseries the trees will come from, where the planting points will be, and how to join in.”
Previously: November 5, 2024.

Background – precedents
As is known, the 10 Million Trees community announced on Earth Day that they are launching the National Tree Planting Day, in which not only the existing volunteers and occasional helpers of 10 Million Trees but all citizens can participate. We hope they will participate. The climate crisis, ecological, and biodiversity crisis affects every inhabitant of the Earth, including Hungary. We can seek solutions to the problem locally. Our goal is for the solution to be as impactful as possible.
Let’s prove in a single day that Hungary is Europe’s greenest country! On a single well-organized, coordinated day, Hungarians should plant as many trees as we possibly can. This time, it’s not the number of trees planted that matters, but the number of participants. Ideally, every Hungarian, once in their lifetime, should plant, in coordination with us, not necessarily more, but just a single sapling.
The first National Tree Planting Day will be held on March 1, 2025, and then every year on the first Saturday of March.
Previously: April 22, 2024
On April 22, 2024, Earth Day, the national community of 10 Million Trees will launch the National Tree Planting Day, inviting the entire country to join us, because: “There is no left- or right-wing climate crisis, heatstroke, drought, or desertification.”
The National Tree Planting Day is Hungary’s local response to global problems. The goal of the 10 Million Trees initiative is to make Hungary the greenest country in Europe.
We won’t hesitate any longer; we’re going to stir things up significantly. We’re taking a big step. And for this, we’re inviting the entire country to join us. If many of us Hungarians believe in it, we can achieve a feat together that will be mentioned with admiration and envy throughout Europe, and perhaps beyond.
Let’s prove that Hungary is the greenest country in Europe!
