May 10: Birds and Trees Day

May 10: Bird and Tree Day! What are you doing today?

Here’s a tip: today, mark your calendar to plant a Miyawaki mini-forest on May 18 in the courtyard of ELTE Kőrösi Csoma Sándor Dormitory!

Why is the Miyawaki mini-forest beneficial?

We love forests, but in cities—due to different functional needs—it’s generally difficult to maintain a forest patch or forest.

The Miyawaki mini-forest—albeit to a more limited extent—can very effectively substitute the habitat-creating and biodiversity-preserving effects of a forest, while also excelling in the ecological services of wooded habitats!

Although the Miyawaki mini-forest is small in area, it has very high biodiversity, as the edge effect characteristic of forests is present almost throughout its entire area.

It can be observed that biodiversity is always highest at habitat boundaries, where sunlight penetrates, but there is already a forest climate, receiving light from one side and shade from the other.

In these areas, various tree and other plant species with different needs find their living conditions:

those requiring light and those tolerant of shade, those preferring warm and cooler climates, and those needing less and more humidity all thrive.

This is similarly true for animal and fungal species!

So, see you on the 18th?
