The Triumph of Active Volunteers

On Sunday, September 21, the Volunteer Watering program series reached its final destination for this year.

In addition to the usual programs organized by 10 Million Trees, this time Péter Geszti also joined us, and on the occasion of the closing ceremony, we brought together a true green civil jamboree: the Jane Goodall Institute and the Humusz Association were with us as well!

Four organizations – one goal: keeping young trees alive during the summer

A unique collaboration launched the Volunteer Watering campaign at the beginning of the summer.

Inspired by the mobilizing power of National Tree Planting Day held on March 1, we decided, in cooperation with Budapest City Hall and following the outreach of BKM FŐKERT Division, to experimentally involve the public in watering the city’s young tree stock.

We have long said that we know well: we need trees. But trees also need us!

That is why it was important for thirsty trees and their condition to be trackable on a map, enjoyable, and playful; we embarked on this extraordinary challenge in collaboration with the developers of the Beeco mapping app.

Simultaneously, promoting the spread of community watering events, we organized Watering Sundays every week in the parks maintained by the city’s Főkert.

The results of the Volunteer Watering exceeded all our imaginations:

✅ nearly 3,000 people stepped out of their shady homes in the sweltering heat to save young trees. Numerous watering communities formed throughout the summer.
✅ We provided approximately  400,000 liters of water to thirsty trees,
✅ The Beeco app reached 17,000 downloads, with 1,500 active “Volunteer Waterers,”
✅ 7,000 trees received water at least once.

We Plant and Sustain!

The last Watering Sunday also became the usual seasonal transition event for 10 Million Trees, as while the period of nurturing and maintenance has concluded, autumn has finally arrived, and a new series of tree plantings can begin.

Against climate anxiety: action and tree planting!

And just as we saw in the success of the Volunteer Watering program, it provides a way out of climate anxiety and helped take action against climate change, we can similarly invite people to act by involving them in tree plantings during the autumn-winter period.
