10 million Trees Fondation / Community
Why 10 Million Trees?
In noble simplicity, because the population of Hungary is of the order of 10 million people, that is, the 10 million Trees implement the “1 man-1 tree” principle.
What is the 10 Million Tree Community – Association, Foundation or What?
At present, it is not a legally registered NGO, but a loosely organized, yet increasingly professional, community. We consider ourselves a community, not a group, although we were set up as a Facebook group. With nearly 40,000 followers nationwide and over 20,000 followers in over 100 local groups, we have grown to become one of the largest thematic green communities in the country. We are working to establish a foundation that will help to achieve the community’s goal. The 10 Million Tree Foundation is under construction.

Where are the trees for planting are coming from?
From corporate and private offerings.
I don't have my own backyard or I no longer have a space in my garden and I can't attend a tree planting event. What can I do?
In this case, there are several options. First, you can make a tree donation. Or, if you live in a balcony apartment, you can “plant” a sapling on the balcony. The greening of balconies and patios does not fulfill all the functions of trees, but it also catches dust, cools, humidifies the air, blooms the bees, and enhances one’s well-being.
Planting/Care
Where can I get the trees to plant? Is it possible to purchase saplings and / or shrubs at a discount?
Negotiations on this matter are in progress. We are in contact with several horticultural companies, and we are going to share this information as soon as possible.
If someone wants to display their name on the tree they offer, what should they do?
Currently, this should be done by themselves, in consultation with the planters involved in the planting. We ask that the labeling be carried out in the most environmentally friendly way possible and that we do not support anchoring it on the tree itself.
Where can I plant a tree?
Our horticulturists, foresters, and ecologists have compiled a professional guidance package that addresses this issue in detail. The material is available here.
Who can attend the plantings?
Anyone, regardless of gender, age or any other condition who wants to plant a tree that is not listed among the forbidden types, regardless of the personal motivation.
I have never planted a tree, how to do it?
Horticulturists, foresters and ecologists of the 10 Million Trees have compiled a professional guidance package about the most important information on tree planting, including suggested or forbidden tree types, care suggestions and planting tips. The material is available here. From time to time, our groups organize planting training sessions and community plantings where you can learn how to plant trees properly. Join our local groups to participate in these events.
For what time are the plantings organized?
The ideal time for tree planting is from the end of the deciduous period to the beginning of budding, before or after the frost. The 10 Million Trees community strives to make the tree plantings happen at this time of the year, which is best for the trees. Therefore, in 2019 we celebrated the Day of Life for the first time on the 9th of November (the first Saturday after the Day of the Dead). With Day of Life we intend to create a tradition and plan to organize a national tree planting event and celebration each year. Find out about specific times and events on the Facebook page of 10 Million Trees and local groups.
What kind of trees should I plant?
The 10 Million Trees essentially supports the planting of native trees. Horticulturists, foresters and ecologists of our community have compiled a professional guidance package about the most important information on tree planting, including suggested or forbidden tree types, care suggestions and planting tips. The materials are available here.
Can I plant a fruit tree?
Every tree matters! Fruit trees not only help with their shadows, but also provide local food which means less transportation, so our answer is: yes!
Are there forbidden trees that should not be planted?
Yes. The 10 Million Trees community does not support the planting of invasive and legally prohibited / unauthorized versions of tree and shrub species. You can find our related statement and the species concerned here.
What kind of trees should I plant, considering the place of planting, soil type and watering needs?
Horticulturists, foresters and ecologists of our community have compiled a professional guidance package about the most important information on tree planting, including guidance based on the above criteria. The materials are available here.
What will happen to the aftercare of the trees, who will water them?
The 10 Million Trees community tries to make sure every tree we plant has an “owner” who will take care of the tree in the long run. In other words, communities are not only responsible for the mass planting, but also for the aftercare of the planted trees. The goal is to have more than 10 million full-value trees in Hungary. Groups find a solution for the aftercare at a local level, which can be done in cooperation with a school, kindergarten, or some other institution. A family or individual can also take care of the trees.
